This church is built on the site of one of the greatest medieval abbeys in Scotland, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 1160s. Local architect John Carver designed the present church (built 1860) in a gothic style reminiscent of medieval architecture.

Architect: John Carver

The church houses several fascinating remnants from the medieval abbey. In the graveyard are fine historic gravestones, a 19th-century watchtower and the last upstanding fragment of the medieval abbey gatehouse.

An impressive towerhouse built on a rocky outcrop by John, the 1st Lord Drummond in the late-15th century, now part of the extensive Drummond Castle. The Renaissance-style gatehouse by John Mylne III, Charles I’s master mason, was added circa 1630. The keep was damaged by Cromwell and was dismantled further after the 1745 Rebellion to prevent Government troops using it as a garrison. It was repaired in 1822, with an upper floor and bellcote added in 1853. Drummond Castle is world famous for its remarkable gardens.

Building Date: Late 15th century

The Cathedral lies in a superb setting on the banks of the Tay shaded by mature trees. Founded in the mid-13th century on the site of an early Columban monastery, this was the head church in the Bishopric of Dunkeld. The building now consists of a renovated choir, chapterhouse, tower and a ruinous nave. The Choir visible today was re-designed by Dunn & Watson in the early 1900s. The Chapter House contains a small museum, as does the tower, where original painted wall decorations can be seen.

A church was probably first built at Fortingall at the end of the 7th century beside the famous ancient yew tree. The present Kirk, designed by Dunn & Watson in 1902, replaced the medieval building. The fine interior is enhanced by the display of several fragments of Pictish cross slabs found during the Kirk’s construction. The village of Fortingall was remodelled from the 1880s in the Arts and Crafts style by James M MacLaren.

Architect: Dunn & Watson
Building Date: 1902, 1936

Exhibitions about local history and the architecture of Fortingall can be seen in the Kirk and Molteno Memorial Hall; built in 1936 and located 200m to the west of the Kirk. Located 8 miles west of Aberfeldy.
