The ‘Dundee Institute of Architects’ is delighted to be able to ensure Doors Open Days, Scotland’s largest free festival celebrating heritage and the built environment, new and old, continues in the city. This is the third year that the ‘DIA’ has co-ordinated and promoted the event in the city. Although requiring a significant amount of work to ensure its success we believe that it is important to express to the people of the city and beyond the rich architectural heritage that exists. The ‘DIA’ is in a key position to emphasise that throughout the city there is quality architecture, from ancient to modern. September will be an important month for Dundee with the opening of the ‘V&A’ museum and ‘Dundee Doors Open Days’. The ‘DIA’ recognises the significance of this event being retained and are especially pleased that the Scottish Civic Trust has chosen to launch this years national event at the Leaf Room, Ninewells, Dundee; an important new architectural contribution to the city by a local architect and one of this years venues.

We have 36 venues opening their doors this year with many favourites returning and some new venues such as Avertical World showing off their exhilarating re-use of a former church building and University of Dundee School of Medicine who are hosting a fantastically informative Open Day. We have three walking tours this year. In addition to the popular Howff tour there will be University of Dundee Museum Services hosting a Public Art & Design Walking Tour whilst eminent local Architect and Town Planner Joe Dagen is guiding participants through a Dundee Heritage Walk.

There are a number of exquisite churches with interiors that are hidden gems and deserve more exposure. The Dundee Art Society will exhibit its collection and there will be opportunities to sneek behind the scenes at Dundee City Archives, The McManus Collections Unit and even backstage at the Caird Hall, The Rep and the Little Theatre.

Find out what happens behind closed doors at the Sheriff court and visit the cells; meet local fire crews, teachers, artists and actors. ‘Doors Open Days’ celebrates the people and buildings of the city and is especially pertinent with Morgan Academy celebrating its 150 years whilst Grove Academy commemorates the sacrifices of local people during both World Wars.

‘Doors Open Days’ caters for all ages with each venue offering something different, interesting and often unseen. This event is not only about the buildings but also the people and what they do to ensure Dundee remains a vibrant city. We would encourage as many people as possible to get out over the weekend of 8th and 9th September; to visit and support as many of the venues as possible. It is impossible for me to mention all the venues but the ‘Dundee Institute of Architects’ along with the ‘Scottish Civic Trust’ greatly appreciates the time and effort made by the people of Dundee in their involvement with this important initiative. A huge thank you is due to the unsung heroes who open their doors.

Our Doors Open Days weekend is 14th and 15th September.
