Scottish Civic Trust are delighted to deliver the Braw Buildings Project, a part of Doors Open Days 2018, in partnership with Hostelling Scotland.
The project, which is part of the Year of Young People 2018, gives over 60 18-25 year olds the chance to discover their heritage by participating in Doors Open Days, and having a free overnight stay in Youth Hostels in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Pitlochry and Stirling!
The Year of Young People 2018 is a themed year initiative by the Scottish Government which aims to inspire Scotland through its young people aged 8 to 26 by celebrating their achievements, valuing their contributions to communities and creating new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally. Young people from the Doors Open Days Youth Advisory Panel helped to co-design and judge the project. Applicants were able to choose where in Scotland they wished to travel to as part of the application process.
Some of the young people supported by this opportunity are avid photographers, bloggers, artists, and we are pleased to be able to give them the opportunity to find creative inspiration while visiting somewhere new. Thanks to our partnership with Scotrail, some of the young people will also get free train travel to their destination, opening up access to discover more of Scotland. In return the young people will share their experiences (be it photos, stories, drawings) through Doors Open Days’ and Hostelling Scotland’s social media channels and website blogs.
Hostelling Scotland Chief Executive, Margo Paterson said: ‘the Braw Buildings Project will support over 60 young people aged 16 to 25 from across Scotland by offering a fantastic opportunity to explore and experience our beautiful country, stay in a Youth Hostel and discover the buildings on their doorstep during Doors Open Days, all for free!’
The Scottish Civic Trust’s Director, Dr Susan O’Connor, said: ‘the Braw Buildings project offers young people the chance to explore their heritage in places they wouldn’t usually get to. We can’t wait to see what they get up to!'
In September, applicants of the Braw Buildings Project will travel far and wide to learn more about Scotland and its fascinating buildings. To see just how far some applicants are travelling, access our Google Map here.
